Vacation route through DC?

I sent an email to a KU friend informing him of my travel plans to Vermont. He has suggested I swing down into the Washington D.C. area to visit his family. He says he has a spare bedroom I could stay in. If I do take him up on his offer, my round trip driving mileage will total close to 3000 miles. I know I should fly, but I love driving.
