Random Notes

  1. Happy B-Day to my college roommate from my senior year. MN, I hope your hectic schedule allows you to celebrate.
  2. I met this past Wednesday with the Assistant Director of Library and Main's CPU Lab supervisor to discuss NEKLS Tech Day which was held on August 10. The Director seemed to embrace a lot of things we said and I think she wants us to explore some of the possibilities that are involved with Library 2.0. The Director asked us to stay for a second meeting with members of Computer Services. We may be turning to a more automated way of checking patrons in for CPU and The Director and Computer Services wanted to pick our brains on the various library card and usage scenarios that may have to be addressed.
  3. Meanwhile, other members of Computer Services are installing the VendPrint software in my lab this upcoming week. I saw a demonstration of VP at Main's lab and was impressed. If things work out right, we will save an enormous amount on the cost on paper. I feel like a kid opening gifts on Christmas.
  4. My lab is now fully staffed. But I'm working with the crew on scheduling issues, especially since all three keep busy schedules outside of their respective lab shifts.
  5. Finally, thanks to C and A for a relaxing Saturday night. I needed to get out of town and coming to Jayhawkland was the perfect remedy.

Boat for Sale

Thanks to BoingBoing.net I just found out that there's a boat for sale. They say this fine craft was made in 1964, can accomodate a crew of two and passengers from walks of life that include a millionaire and his wife, high school teacher Roy Hinckley, a girl from the farmlands of Kansas, and a movie actress.
They only criticism I have for this boat is it's good for only a three hour tour. Click on the picture below to learn more:

That's right. It's the Minnow from Gilligan's Island.

After surfing around on this sight I found this bad theme for the original pilot episode:

Ugh!!!

The Dog Whisperer of Shawnee, KS

MS and PS went on a well-deserved vacation last week. After all their efforts in taking care of DrB. the past three years, a trip to California was the perfect escape for them. It had been quite some time since their last vacation together, so they were looking forward to leaving the Midwest with no worries, no troubles. So they thought…..

They had Charlie to worry about.

Charlie was a new addition to their household. He ate vast amounts of food, he slept all day never going to work, he hogged most of the bed when MS and PS and he slept at night, and he picked on Schnitzel, another member of the household. And what’s worse, Charlie had a difficult time getting along with the next-door neighbor yellow lab.

Charlie, you see, is a two-year dachshund who was adopted by MS and PS about two months ago as a playmate for Schnitzel, their 10-year old dachshund. When I first met Charlie, he was full of affection, full of playfulness, and very hyper, very energetic. And it’s because of these qualities, that MS and PS wondered if Charlie could be trained to be an obedient dog.

And to make matters worse, Charlie would tense up whenever he saw the yellow lab J come out of his house to take care of doggy business. When Charlie first met the yellow lab, he growled and barked meanly at J causing J to retreat to the far end of his own yard. This caused concern for MS and PS because Schnitzel always played happily with J. They wondered if Charlie had a chip on his doggy shoulders against big dogs.

And so, MS and PS asked LE, J’s owner and trainer, to watch the dachshunds while they were away. LE agreed but unbeknownst to MS and PS, LE had a secret plan to work with Charlie and break him of his hyperactive doggy persona.

I went over to their house last Thursday to play with Charlie and Schnitzel. As usual, they were very happy to see me. After about thirty minutes of play, LE came over to feed the dachshunds. After the dogs ate, LE decided to get Charlie’s leash out and walk him over to her and J’s yard. What I saw then simply amazed me: J and Charlie were getting along as if they had known each other for many years. They were playing.

LE explained to me that she decided to include Charlie on her morning walks with J, and once Charlie realized that J was a docile, friendly dog, he learned to relax around him. MS and PS were due back from their vacation on Sunday and LE told me she planned to surprise them when they came back.

So when Sunday rolled around, another friend phoned LE that she was headed up to the airport to pick up MS and PS. LE went into the house and brought Schnitzel and Charlie over to her yard. When MS and PS arrived home and were directed to go to their neighbor’s yard to see what was going on, their jaws dropped as they saw Charlie, Schnitzel, and J playing together.

LE has spent a considerable amount of time training her own J. And, in essence, she has been like a mother to him, especially when J had his doggy ACL surgery almost two years ago. When PS saw what LE had done with Charlie, she asked her on the spot if she would like to be Charlie’s trainer.

As of this writing, I don’t know whether LE accepted or not. But I do know this: she is damn good with dogs. And if any person can break a dog of bad behavior and habits, she can.

If this gentleman can do it....

then a library system can do it. This gentlemen has earned the admiration of videobloggers and libraries throughout the world. Fantastic stuff! You can see more of it on youtube.com.

I've seen notes about this man in about five library tech blogs.

Another thought about Tech Day

One statement that I failed to include in my audio blog about Tech Day is the lunch I had with SV, a Johnson County Librarian and web development staff member. It was nice and refreshing to see a fellow librarian who really shared the same fervor for Library 2.0.
Granted, we work for two public libraries whose organizational charts are probably at the opposite ends of the administrative spectrum. BUT, we both recognize that Library 2.0 is what is happening now in our profession, and we need to promote it to our staff and to our public.
Even though I met SV for a short period of time, I have decided to include his blog "The Book of Nature" in my blog list. Here are a couple of his posts to show his passion for both libraries and the use of technology in the library:

NEKLS TECH DAY

WE'RE ALL WINNERS IN LIBRARIES

On a separate note, SND and I will meet with our Assistant Library Director this coming week to talk about Tech Day.

A Couple of Steps closer to my cruise in Elliot Bay

I went to Cabela's today to see what this store could offer me in terms of my upcoming sailing trip in the Puget Sound area. Well, I bought a large piece of luggage which I hope is large enough to hold a sleeping bag as well as other outdoor accessories.
Unfortunately, Cabela's did not have a winter parka that I liked so I cruised down to Burlington Coat Factory in Olathe and bought a heavier winter coat on sale with a 25% discount.
Next item? Perhaps a new sleeping bag.

Listening to Audio this weekend

I'm listening to Sylvia Nasar's A Beautiful Mind as I do laundry this weekend.

Summary judgment so far:

If you want to be entertained: See the movie.
If you want details: Read Nasar's book.

I'll post a full review on BookFix soon.

You Get What You Ask For

Last Saturday, while at MS/PS anniversary celebration, I chatted with LE who is from the Quad Cities area up in Iowa. I regaled her about my recent trip up to the Amana Colonies and the fact that I enjoyed the wines I had brought back with me in June. LE told me that she was headed back up to Iowa and wanted to know if she could bring back any wine for me.

Casually, I said, "Okay, about a hundred bucks worth."

Well, while I was driving home from work tonight, my cell phone rings. It was MS telling me that LE had just delivered $100 worth of various assortments of wine to his house--14 bottles total. The types of wine include Niagara Americana (white wine), Cranberry Crush, Strawberry Delight, and Purple Passion.

Now as I picked up the wine, I said to myself "How on earth am I going to handle 14 bottles of wine?"

I decided to store most of the bottles in a cool place in my basement. Meanwhile, I will keep three bottles at a time on top my frig, drinking a glass of wine a day prior to going to bed.

That's my strategy and I'm sticking to it. But, of course, it won't hurt to invite friends over to help me drink it.

Oh that Ricky Bobby

Will Farrell's NASCAR movie was fun to watch. Ferrell has the ability to be irreverant but does not make the humor profane. And once again, John C. Reilly strikes all the right chords as Ricky Bobby's buddy.

After seeing the trailer, I am looking forward to "Stranger Than Fiction" which comes out in the fall. It stars Ferrell, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson. And I believe its plot caters to Ferrell's comic ability and his character looks more humble.

Quirky questions at reference today

I had a couple of unusual questions today at ref desk. First, a lady asked me about books about Satan and Lucifer. Unfortunately, her card was blocked so she could not check the books out.
Then, a gentleman approached me with a copy of what looked like "The Declaration of Independence." He said he wanted to authenticate the value of the document. I felt we didn't have the resources so I gave him the phone numbers to some local area museums as well as the Truman Library in Independence, MO. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I thought his document was not worth much.

Schlitterbahn's A-comin'

This afternoon two representatives from Schlitterbahn Water Parks came to our library to assemble a display in the entry way. The display shows how much land Schlitterbahn will take up once it is built in the projected 3 to 3 1/2 years. To accommodate the construction, the Wyandotte County Fairgrounds will be demolished and moved elsewhere and I'm not sure whether a fire station on State Avenue will remain or not. And 99th Street will be complete reconstructed to handle Schlitterbahn as well as Nebraska Furniture Mart, Cabellas, and Race traffic.
Anyway, KCK, the area I serve as a librarian, is becoming a place of destination. I do believe the folks from Jackson County, MO can learn from this. If they are not careful, WYCO might add a new sports stadium or two.
